Ten years ago, almost to the day, I was moving into my studio apartment in the West Village.
A few weeks before that, I was singing Jay-Z’s lyrics “I'm the new Sinatra, and since I made it here, I can make it anywhere, yeah, they love me everywhere.” at my going away party in LA.
I had just quit my pay-the-bills serving gig I’d had for eight years, given up the lease on my gorgeous Hollywood Hills apartment, sold my Audi tt, and packed everything I owed and thought might fit into a Manhattan-sized apartment.
Today, those lyrics aren’t what I sing to pump myself up anymore.
As I sit in my luxury, Dumbo loft apartment, married to my unicorn-of-a-husband, running my dream business that pays me more money than I could have imagined when I landed here, I feel a little like Carrie Bradshaw. I realize, those lyrics have become my truth.
I built my business in arguably one of the most expensive, challenging, and as Lin Manuel Miranda sings in Hamilton “greatest cities in the world”. While I wouldn’t suggest this move for everyone, it’s been one of my best.
NYC continues to be one of my greatest teachers that’s supported my business and personal growth in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I moved here ten years ago.
That’s why I went live to celebrate “making it” as a multi-six-figure business in New York, and three lessons living in the “greatest city in the world” has taught me (that you can apply for your own success without paying overpriced rent ).
I’m diving into:
the number one thing I did that allowed me to “make it here”, and how I used this to guarantee my business success.
the expansive belief that helped me “start at the top”, how I’ve carried this into business, the times I’ve held myself back over the years when I haven’t leaned into this mindset, and how I see this thinking support my clients as they make their own six and seven-figures.
why New Yorkers don’t consider you a New Yorker until you’ve lived here ten years (!), the perspective shift this gave me when I was starting my business that helped me grow to my first six-figures, and how this gave me the kind of humility AND confidence that’s served sustaining multi-six-figures with room to scale.
Wishing you your version of success!
XO, Kim
