As I fly back to NYC after a week away in Iceland with hubs, I’ve been thinking about how grateful I am to my business and clients for what they've given me in terms of purpose, joy, and the financial freedom to take a trip like this.
It also made me think back on how I got “here”…and some of the unhinged things I did in the early days to book clients and grow this business.
This is a bit of a longer read, so feel free to join me down memory lane or scroll to the bottom for my takeaway.
Picked up a weekend bottle service job in my 30s on top of my 9–5 so I could cover NYC bills and invest in my business and coaching.
Delivered 100 free coaching sessions to practice my craft and build momentum.
Printed business cards for free sessions and left them in every coffee shop and bookstore in Manhattan (pretty sure this never worked
).
Worked on my mindset every day and left myself positive notes and reminders + content ideas everywhere.
Reached out in the DMs to offer free coaching to people I met in FB groups. This was before I knew this was a strategy! It’s how I booked my first ever paying coaching client, and years later this helped me make an EXTRA $41,150.
Started going live every single week back in 2017 (and still do) when my FB group had 13 people and it was mostly my mom and friends watching.
Studied my face off to master my craft and better understand the brain, emotional regulation, business, messaging, marketing, and sales. Started developing my own ideas, "hot takes", and thought leadership.
Got super uncomfortable and spoke on panels with people way more successful than me when I didn't feel "qualified","ready", or "good enough" Got called a "powerhouse" and attracted potential clients as a result.
Offered 3 full-length coaching scholarships to validate my offer, build confidence, and get testimonials Some of these later turned into paying clients.
Said "yes" to any and all collab opportunities so I could practice talking about my work, thought leadership, and expand my network.
Created and sold a membership, mastermind, group coaching program, and live course just to see what would “stick”
Looking back, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend all of these strategies today…But, I’m also so proud of past Kim, who was willing to test, try, iterate, put herself out there, and sometimes fall on her face.
I remember how scared and uncomfortable I was ALL.THE.TIME. But, one thing I wasn’t was undecided.
Even though, back then I had no idea it would all lead to building a business that’s now been fully booked for 6.5 years, has made $1.8M, has allowed me to retire my husband from corporate in NYC, and has given me a “happy little life” (and beautiful trips like this)…
I DID know I was all-in, committed, determined, and certain it was a matter of WHEN not IF I’d have the success I wanted.
Sure, I doubted that some days. But, I also knew and trusted I was capable, would figure it out, and my success was inevitable if I kept getting up every time I felt knocked down.
I’d love to hear from you! Hit “reply” and let me know the most “unhinged” thing you’ve done to grow your business!
Here’s to celebrating the “unhinged” ways we all show up for ourselves and our dreams as much as the polished strategies and shiny results on the other side!
P.S. Wherever you’re at on your business journey, I see you and celebrate you! And, if you’re ready for 1:1 support to grow to six and seven-figures, it would be my honor and privilege to coach you.
