I’ve only missed about two lives a year over the last 7 years, and usually only for holidays or vacation. But, I canceled one this week for neither of those reasons.
I said yes to a last-minute biopsy appointment. Thankfully, I’m fine 🙂
I also recorded a quick bite-size biz lesson afterward to share two important takeaways about taking time off and modeling as a CEO. Watch it here.
And, I’ve been sitting with a lot of gratitude because saying “yes” to that appointment without worrying about the bill might be the most luxurious thing my business has ever given me.
Let me explain...(Trigger warning: brief mention of the Big C and healthcare. Please skip if needed.)
Earlier this month, my doctor recommended a sonogram after my routine mammogram.
This is normal for me, so I didn't think anything of it, until they found something suspicious and ordered a biopsy to rule out the Big C.
As these things go, they were booked up for some time. So, when a cancellation popped up for an appointment in two days, I felt like I'd "manifested" it and said "yes" without hesitation.
Not because I'm fearless.
But because I didn't have to ask:
"Can I afford this?"
I'm both privileged and blessed to have scaled a business that affords me my $1450/month health insurance without thinking twice about paying it.
And, I know I have the funds to cover the out-of-pocket costs for a sonogram, biopsy, and what treatment and time off would cost me if I needed it.
But that hasn't always been true.
I remember being 33 and stressing about how to afford my IUD.
I've never had employer health insurance, and I've always opted for a high deductible because I don't have any known conditions and rarely get sick.
But this means every scare or optional, preventive treatment, I've always paid for out of pocket.
There's so much that's f*cked up about that...from a healthcare, women's reproductive rights, and my own mindset at the time perspective, and given I'm also someone with tremendous privilege and access to resources.
But I'll save that rant for another time…
The point here is: the difference at 43 is I've built my own profitable business and wealth I didn’t have at 33.
So when the appointment opened up, I knew I could cover it from my checking account without changing my quality of life.
I knew I had savings and investment income if I got bad news and had to pay for treatment and cover my time off.
The wildest part? Right before the biopsy - when I was already laying there half naked, prepped, and ready to go - the doctor insisted on redoing the imaging.
It turned out the original images were taken incorrectly... and I was fine.
She canceled the procedure on the spot.
I can't help but think...What if I hadn't been able to take that appointment?
What if I'd waited out of fear?
I'd be walking around with the stress of wondering if I had a ticking time bomb inside me, even though everything was always OK.
And I wonder what toll that would've taken on my mental and physical health.
And this is why being able to say yes to a last-minute biopsy appointment feels like the ultimate luxury my business has afforded me.
I love a 5-star hotel and a boujie dinner out as much as anyone.
But after experiencing all kinds of luxury, I can say this with certainty: Being able to take care of yourself and your loved ones when it matters most is the ultimate flex.
This is also why I’m so obsessed with simplicity in business, scaling smarter, and caring just as much about what you do with your money as how much you make.
Yes, I’m proud and grateful for the nearly $1.7M I’ve made over the last 6.5 years.
But I’m even more grateful for the freedom it’s given me: The stability, peace of mind, and ability to say “yes” without hesitation when life throws something unexpected my way.
I know I can’t fix our healthcare system or the systemic inequities so many face.
But I can be a voice for a different way to scale - one that prioritizes profit, sustainability, and quality of life.
Because real wealth isn’t just about what you can buy.
It’s about the freedom to make choices that protect what matters most.
