Back when I was still acting, the mindset of “being it” before you have it allowed me to book jobs, and the same is true for you in business when it comes to booking clients.
I distinctly remember one of my favorite roles I booked in LA for a Jack in the Box commercial. I played a bride on her wedding day, and Jack is one of the wedding guests. He tells everyone at the wedding “it’s not going to last.”
“What?!” I yelled as the bride, throwing my cake at him and losing my shit because my character thought he was talking about my marriage (so many mindset lessons in this commercial, but I digress ).
Turns out - and the punchline to the commercial - Jack was really referring to the limited-time special at Jack in the Box that they were promoting.
The point of this is not so much the commercial itself, but my mindset behind booking that job - and how that same mindset is what supports booking clients and making money in any industry.
I knew when I walked into that audition room that this part was mine. I could see what this commercial was supposed to look like and decided to play full out - committed - to that vision.
When you see me on the groom’s shoulders literally destroying the set in rage on the spot, what you don’t know is that wasn’t in the script - that’s the unique perspective I brought when I auditioned.
When I was paired up with an actor during auditions, I told my partner, “I’m going to lose my shit in there and fling myself in the air at you. Please catch me.”
I didn’t ask permission, check in, or shrink back - from the casting directors or other actors. I didn’t wonder how everyone else was doing it or if my idea and take was “right”. I didn’t worry if coloring outside the lines and doing things differently was too risky.
I decided. I owned what I believed to be true for that role and let go of trying to prove anything in the audition room.
I got really clear on my unique edge, the way only I could embody the part - and that energy married with my trust and belief translated into my actions, and in turn, I saw the result I wanted.
The same mindset and approach of “it’s already mine” and “I trust MY way and vision” instead of looking over your shoulders to someone else’s version also applies to your business.
Because if you think about something that you already are or already have, you show up differently than when you feel and focus on the gap between where you are and what you want, right?
This mindset also allows you to trust your own ideas, your creativity, your take, and the approach only you can bring that’s essential for standing out and creating a “blue ocean” that makes the competition obsolete and your big results inevitable.
What can you decide is already yours in advance of having it?
What would happen if you showed up in your work and acted like you already had the booked-out client list, the income, or the impact you dream of?
What approach would you trust if you knew your results were inevitable? What “risks” would you take with your work?
If you decide, think, and act like you already are it - in advance of having it (“it” being the part, the right-fit client, sold out launch, six or seven-figures) - if you believe it’s already yours instead of asking for permission to have it - you show up in a way that makes that true - you energetically attract or take the kind of “risks” to create the opportunities you need to get your own show-stopping results in business.
