Last year, on our honeymoon, my husband and I went on a beautiful hike through the Redwoods at Muir Woods.
Along the trail, we kept seeing patches that looked like a tiny forest fire had occurred, and we didn't understand what it was because the rest of the forest around them was intact.
We did a little research and learned Indigenous people would intentionally light small forest fires to clear debris to make way for new growth to come through - what we were seeing was actually for the health of the forest and allows the forest to thrive.
This made me think about the metaphorical and beneficial forest fires in business: maybe you’re having issues with team members, a few clients didn’t re-sign with you, or your last launch flopped gloriously. Those flames are very real and they can feel devastating in the moment.
What if those fires aren’t burning your business down and are, instead, happening to clear out the old and make space for something new?
What if those fires are making room for something new, something bigger, better, and more beautiful to come into your business?
What if that debris only makes the soil - the foundation - of what you’re growing that much more fertile and rich to support abundance and sustainable success?
I just celebrated eight years with my person and one year married, I live in my dream city, neighborhood, and apartment, and I have built and scaled a multi-six-figure business MY way, on my terms, that I love. I’m living my message and my pinch-me happy little life, and it's easy to forget how much had to go up into flames for me to create space for all the goodness I have now.
But, this current healthy forest is here BECAUSE of the challenges and things that needed to fall apart or away. The same way those beautiful redwoods in Muir Woods continue to soar BECAUSE of the space created for them to do so by those intentional small fires.
Sometimes, if you want a big forest that’s healthy and stands the test of time, as cliché as it sounds, things fall apart and away to make way for that bigness to survive, grow, and thrive.
