Sounds basic AF, I know, but you’d be amazed at how many actors would bail on auditions because they had something ‘better’ come up and decided it wasn’t a big enough job or worth it…
Or who would routinely show up late
Or who weren’t consistent in terms of their attitude, preparedness, or even in how they performed material.
And, when you’re auditioning, yes, how you deliver a scene obviously matters, but casting is also looking to see if you’re a professional or a PITA.
Because there’s a whole lot more than you at stake and big money being spent on productions. More than talent, they want to know if they can trust you to show up, be on time (because time literally costs A LOT of money on set), and do your job.
Meaning, acting ability is one piece of what gets you a part, and there are a lot of other factors that constitute getting - or not getting - hired. Plenty of very talented people don’t work for this reason.
Friend, the same is true for you, your business, your content marketing, and what leads to conversions, sales, booking right-fit clients, and making recurring revenue.
Yes, being good at what you do matters. This is a prerequisite if you’re charging for your services.
Yes, the context of your content matters.
Yes, your messaging, your words that sell, your unique edge, your story, the quality of your content, the value you provide, and how you connect it back to the problem you solve and the results your work delivers obviously all matter and contribute to what compels someone to pay attention, click, and want to hire you.
AND, if you’re not seeing the return from your content you want, before you go reworking your strategy, I’d invite you to check in on the other factors that go into someone handing over their credit card: are you showing up when you say will? Are you being consistent in your message, work, and frequency? Are you building or breaking trust?
Because your content is about more than sharing value with your audience. It’s about more than spreading ideas or being a thought leader.
As much as I’m ALL about building relationships to grow and scale a profitable business, I’ll go as far as to say your content is about more than creating connections alone…just like being a paid actor is about more than a great performance alone.
Your content is also at the core of how you build trust with your people AND yourself.
Just like, a BIG part of what has a director sign your contract and paycheck to have you come to set has to do with the trust you’ve created that you’ll show up, deliver, and not create drama.
Because trust is as important, if not MORE important, than strategy and talent.
After all, a director will hire a lesser talented actor they know, like, and trust to show up on time, be easy to work with, and get the job done than a brilliant actor who’s always late, flakey, demanding, a diva/divo, or doesn’t listen.
When you marry skill with consistency, you’re unstoppable and people want to throw money at you all day, every day.
This means, you can take all that pressure off perfect content and the very trash that keeps you from showing up consistently, and instead, focus on being where you say you’ll be, knowing THAT is what leads to bigger results.
