God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
The serenity prayer is one of the things that helped me be present when my dad was passing and still show up fully for my clients, team, and business.
And, it’s applicable right now as we all navigate Coronavirus in our lives and businesses.
The last part of this prayer, ‘the wisdom to know the difference’ is key here. What I find so often is we interchange this prayer and concept.
We try to have the courage to change the things we can’t and accept the things we can change.
We obsess over the situation we’re in and all the things we can’t have or do.
And, we give excuses and say it’s OK when we don’t show up for our clients or businesses because it feels hard.
Bueler?
The wisdom to know the difference tells a different story.
It asks you to accept (that doesn’t mean LIKE or want) what’s going on and the circumstances we’re in. Acceptance, btw, doesn’t mean you want it, like it, condone it, or any such nonsense like that. Acceptance also doesn’t mean permanence.
Acceptance means you let go of the white-knuckle grip you have over something you’re trying to control.
And, this wisdom also asks you to have the courage to show up for and take action on the things you can right now. It asks you to have the courage to manage your mind.
Courage to change the things you can doesn’t mean it feels good, easy, or that you wouldn’t rather do something else. Courage is literally defined as the ability to do something that frightens one.
Courage to change the things you can means showing up EVEN THOUGH it feels scary and uncomfortable.
This wisdom will get you through this time. And, here’s the kicker, this wisdom is the same wisdom that will *always* serve you as an entrepreneur building, growing, and scaling a profitable business you love.
Here’s some wisdom about what you can and can’t control that I invite you to apply to your business and life right now: Stop borrowing trouble. Borrow success instead.
I GET that we’re in the middle of a global pandemic that’s affecting everyone. I know that the normal human response is fear and to future worry-trip.
But, worrying about things that haven’t happened, yet (things you CAN’T control) are robbing you of your today. And, that future-tripping is sabotaging the present and future of your business (and life). After all, what we focus on expands.
IF you want to borrow from the future, I invite you to choose what you want your business and life to look like three months from now and spend all your time obsessing about, “What if THAT happens?!”
We will get through this, but how you get through this and what your business looks like on the other side is going to be determined by the quality of your thoughts and the way you show up right now (things you CAN control).
Let’s all stop borrowing trouble we don’t have and borrow success instead. Let’s all focus on knowing the difference between what we can and can’t control. Let’s accept the things we can’t and have the courage to show up for what we CAN. That -ish is usually the uncomfortable stuff, but discomfort today will make it possible for you to show up for what you CAN control so you can thrive right now and in the future. Promise.
Wishing you your version of success now and always.
