Ever know someone who’s dating and wanting to find their soulmate match who spends all their time telling you about all the things they DON’T want in a partner?
And, then wonder why they keep ending up on dates with people who aren’t a match and have all those qualities they don’t want…only to reinforce a story that there just must not be someone out there for them?
Ever notice how easy it can be to do this in business as well?
Creating clarity on who isn’t a fit for your work can be a well-intended ideal client exercise that often leads to focusing on and attracting exactly who isn’t a fit.
Think about it: if all of the energy you pour into your marketing (and mindset) is geared towards keeping out who you don't want to work with or who's fit, you’re going to have a hard time speaking to the person you DO want to work with.
Because what you focus on expands, right? (And, what you focus on and speak to in marketing also expands!)
Communicating who you don’t want to work with can be useful - just like knowing who isn’t a match for you when you’re dating, is good to know - but, when this becomes the focus, it can become a wall that keeps people out.
Here’s a different perspective for marketing - whether that’s for your next date or dream client - knowing who you're FOR is still a clear boundary (boundaries aren’t only about keeping people out) that's not only much more open and inviting, but also allows you to focus on the very things that yield the big results you want.
I see this through clients all the time. When someone shifts their mindset, energy, focus, marketing, copy, and sales from keeping who they’re not for out, to speaking specifically to who they’re for and inviting them in, the clients and cash start showing up everywhere to match.
They start seeing those epic income months that can feel like, “How the hell did this happen?!” when the truth is, those clients (or dates) were always there, they just didn’t notice them or invite them before.
If you know who you’re not for - that’s useful - and I’d invite you to use that clarity to allow you to shift your focus to who you ARE for and bring this to your marketing and mindset so you can start to notice and book yourself out with those ‘hell yes’ clients.
