Want to know one of the easiest ways to get more done, create more prolific work, and in turn, make more money?
Wait for it, because this is going to be so annoyingly simple, you’re gonna want to tune it out.
Being disciplined with minimizing distractions and multitasking will help you maximize output and results in EVERY area of your business and life.
Before you decide that’s basic AF, check in with yourself: are you doing this?
Or are texts, ‘urgent’ emails, and the urge to check the number of likes on your last post interrupting your workflow?
Are you focused and getting blocks of uninterrupted ‘deep work’ (as Cal Newport calls it) time? Or are your loved ones coming to say hi, notifications catching your eye, and chores (and snacks) in the kitchen getting the best of your attention? Or maybe you’re trying to multitask to get all the things done at once, and YOU are the distraction?
Lack of focus and trying to do all the things, especially all at once, aka multitasking, is detrimental to your business output, success, and your mindset that runs the show. I’d bet more entrepreneurs lose money due to lack of focus and the number of distractions they have every day than because they’re lacking information or strategy.
Focusing in on ONE thing at a time and minimizing distractions will change your ability to make money, AND it will lower your stress.
Listen to this: multitasking has been found to increase cortisol (the stress hormone) production and adrenaline (the fight-or-flight hormone). So, it’s no surprise multitasking has been linked to increased stress levels and feeling mentally exhausted (this is also why so many of you are feeling more drained at the end of the day during lockdown).
THIS is crucial right now when stress levels and responses are higher in response to Covid-19 and all that’s going on in our world.
Multitasking won’t help you get more done or make more money. Instead, it will *actually* add to the stress and exhaustion you’re already experiencing.
This is just another reason managing your mind is crucial to manage your business right now (and always).
But, it’s tempting to be sucked into the stories your brain hands you that tell you you’re the exception to this rule and a badass at multitasking and can get ahead doing more...all at once.
I preach focus all the time, but don’t take my word for it, Scientist Harold Pashler showed that when people do two cognitive tasks at once, their cognitive capacity can drop from that of a Harvard MBA to that of an eight-year-old.
That means, when you’re distracted, allowing interruptions, and trying to multitask, you’ve basically got an eight-year-old showing up as the CEO to run your business. I’d guess there are A LOT of eight-year-olds running online businesses right about now.
Stop sitting at the kids’ table and give yourself and your business the gift of being disciplined with minimizing distractions and multitasking!
The more you can minimize distractions and multitasking and create focus for the deep work in your business, the more you’ll not only get more quality, prolific work created, but the more you’ll also stand out and naturally differentiate your business online so you can make more of that money doing the work you love (without feeling like a stress ball).
How can you change the narrative to be the badass at focusing on ONE thing at a time and making bank with more ease and calm?
Wishing you time for 'deep work' and your version of success!
