On our walk the other day, a ten-year-old kid came running out of one of the buildings to stop my husband and I, “Do you want cupcakes?!”
We’re not cupcake people (don’t judge, lol), but we stayed for a few minutes to listen to his pitch (complete with a downsell for water!), and walked away bookmarking a new bakery to check out and pick up treats from another time.
I had no idea this bakery existed or how long it’s been there. What’s wild is we walk by this building most days. I’m sure there are some signs somewhere we’ve just never noticed before.
They might have the *best* cupcakes in our ‘hood, but unless I had looked them up before or decided to go explore the labyrinth of shops inside - they would have remained unknown to me and the countless other people walking by, with other places to go, and plenty of other options already grabbing our attention and wallets. It’s NYC after all.
This bakery’s only on my radar now because someone quite literally was willing to unapologetically take up space and put themselves in my path to let me know clearly they exist and have something to offer.
Friend, the online space, and getting visible in a way that leads to a pipeline of warm, right-fit clients who turn into paying customers isn’t all that different.
There are so many talented business owners who *think* they’re getting visible because they have a sign up on their online storefront and their website or social media account, but just like this bakery, there’s usually a whole lot else already grabbing people’s attention and wallets on the social streets.
Unless you’re going out of your way to put yourself in front of new people to let them know you’ve got metaphorical cupcakes, you might have the *best* option, but no one will know you’re past all the noise and down the hall.
What I’ve seen after seven-and-a-half years in business running my own booked out, multi-six-figure business and supporting clients to collective multi-millions is it’s not enough to simply be ‘visible’, business asks you to take up space and be willing to put yourself in front of - in the path of - your people so they can actually see and hear you if you want to make sales now and later.
So, take a cue from this ten-year-old marketing genius and ask yourself where you have an opportunity to step out and actively put yourself and your offers in front of people instead of waiting and hoping they find you.
This kind of marketing and trading visibility for taking up space is what leads to increased sales and those $10k, $20k, and $100k months.
Wishing you your version of success.
P.S. Want to take a cue from this ten-year-old sales wiz but not sure where to get started, what you’re selling, how to talk about it in a way people actually understand, or feeling lost on how you put yourself more directly on the path in front of your people?
