My life is my message." -Mahatama Gandhi
I distinctly remember getting on one of those connection ‘coffee chats’ with a fellow entrepreneur a few years ago.
We were chatting back and forth, and she asked me what I did, as you do.
I wanted to slide down my seat and wondered if I could feign a bad internet connection. Instead, I started rambling.
I’m someone who turns bright red at the drop of a hat. If you’ve ever joined me on one of my lives, you know, my whole body will turn red - heat, cold, nerves, anger, you name it, I turn technicolor.
Mid-fumble through trying to describe what I do, I could feel my skin getting hot. I could also feel my heart starting to move its way up into my throat.
Do you know what I’m talking about? That feeling where you silently worry you might actually choke on your own heart and simultaneously remind yourself how ridiculous and impossible that is? That feeling.
It wasn’t unfamiliar to me.
I remember being SO uncomfortable. I also remember thinking, “Ugh. You don’t get it. I’m SO good at what I do. I just don’t know how to tell you. I don’t know how to explain what I do. And, now I seem like I have no idea what I’m doing.”
Needless to say, this wasn’t a call that ended in a beautiful new friendship. I mean, I was a hot mess by the time we finished. I’m sure the girl on the other side of the Zoom screen couldn’t tell what was going on with my internally, but I know for sure that sort of energy puts up a big, invisible wall bite
It WAS a wakeup call that made me realize how important it is to be able to speak about what it is we do in a way other people can understand…you know, without tripping over our words, turning bright red, sweating through our shirt, or wanting to hide in a bathroom stall at a networking event.
There’s nothing wrong with a few nerves, in fact, they’re normal, but it doesn’t serve us or our businesses when we don’t have the words to talk about our work.
Words sell. Our confidence sells.
And combining confidence with the right words? Well, that’s business marketing gold.
It doesn’t matter how good we are at what we do if we can’t communicate it to others. It doesn’t matter if they’ll ‘get’ it once they experience it…because to first experience our beautiful work, our people are going to need to some words to sell them on said experience.
At the core of our marketing, content, the connections we’re building, and our sales processes are the words we use to describe what it is we do, who we’re for, what problem we solve, and how we can help…aka our message.
Without a clear and concise message that connects to the heart of our people and speaks to the results that are possible, well, we might as well hide in the bathroom stall because no one will understand how we can help them online.
Our message forms the nucleus of our marketing and sales process. I believe it’s a part of the back-end of our customer journey or what I call ‘business flow’ along with our mission and mindset.
I talk a lot about the importance of relationships in business, but it’s not simply enough to know people…otherwise, it wouldn’t have mattered what I said on that coffee chat!
A big part of connecting in a way that builds that know, like, and trust is including and integrating our message. This is how we connect the dots for the people so they understand what it is we do, how we can help them, and what’s possible when they buy our products and services.
I’m happy to report, I put that uncomfortable coffee chat to good use and mastered my heart-centered message, and it’s been a game changer.
Now? I want to scream message from the rooftops. I want everyone to know what it is I do and how I can help them. And, it feels so easy to talk about my work and in turn, sell it.
This is now something I love supporting my clients with, so they’re able to confidently talk about their work in a way that sounds like them and connects with paying clients.
And, now, I want to pay it forward and help you do the same because I know what it feels like to feel confused talking about what it is you do, and I know how much is possible on the other side when we master our heart-centered message.
